Microbiological Tests - Vibrio vulnificus & V. parahaemolyticus
Secure Food Solutions has patent-pending microbiological tests to detect and enumerate Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in shellfish and environmental samples. Our Vibrio test method is fast, reliable, low cost and easy to use.
Availability of such methods will expand the number and types of laboratories able to test for V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus. The tests will make Vibrio testing more accessible to states for reopening sampling, as well as oyster processors and post harvest processors. Adoption of these methods will also allow more states to generate background data on Vibrio levels for water quality monitoring and risk evaluations.
Developed by scientists at Mississippi State University and the FDA, the test method uses separate 96-well plates with a unique combination of selective ingredients and two-phase culture (solid phase culture and liquid phase enrichment broth) – one plate for V. vulnificus, one plate for pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus, and one plate for total V. parahaemolyticus. Detection is as simple as a change in color of the medium.
Speed – Real-time detection of a single cell of V. vulnificus and V. parahaemolyticus within 24 hours (+/- 2 hours) of introducing a target sample to the detection kits.
Accuracy – High Sensitivity/True Positive (>95%) and Specificity/True Negative (>95%), equivalent to the standard FDA Bacteriological Analytical Methods; also allows for differentiation of pathogenic and non-pathogenic Vp.
Low Cost – Does not require additional machinery or equipment (other than an incubator), to detect and enumerate V. vulnificus or V. parahaemolyticus in the test sample.
Easy to Use – Performed with minimal training in the lab or field.
